Improve Your Language: free langauge practice

This webiste allows claims to help with pronuncation by offering native-speaker models. On the website, you to select the language at the bar on the bottom of the screen. You can select the language and then search a word or phrase you are wanting to hear spoken by a native speaker. The serach engine then directs you to a YouTube video (often TEDtalks) of that word used in context with viusal aids. The links below take you to an external website to search key words and phrases in that language. Below are the languages offered at DMPS, more languages are available on website.

TV Series in Spanish

Many streaming services offer TV Series, movies, and even yoga in multiple languages. Watch a familiar movie in the new language without subtitles. Try a new series and turn on subtitles but only in the new langauge. Many middle school and high school students are enjoying "Go! Vive a tu manera" on Netflix; set in Spain and lots of great music.

Mango Languages @DMPL

The Des Moines Public Libraries offer language clubs, books, and online language practice through Mango Languages. It is great way to start a new language or keep up your skills over the summer. Learn more here.

Shows for Language Learners: Spanish

A Spanish teacher team produced a video series for Spanish language learners. You can change the rate of speech and the vocabulary is controlled so new learners can't get too lost. Try it here.

Maguaré: PBS in Colombia, webiste

Colombia developed a very engaging webiste in Spanish for students. Lots of songs, books, games, videos, and creative outlets. While initially targeted to a younger audience, it is very easy to use for new language learners because it has great visuals. Visit the website here.
